The term's origin is quite fascinating and somewhat accidental. It derives from the Greek words “τὰ μετὰ τὰ φυσικά” (tà metà tà physiká), meaning “the books that come after the books on nature.” This title wasn't given by Aristotle himself but was coined by his first editor, Andronicus of Rhodes, simply because these treatises were placed after those on physics in the collected works.
