Atoll Maldives Palms __full__ Jun 2026

To appreciate the Maldives, one must first understand its foundation. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef, enclosing a central lagoon, that has formed around the skeleton of a long-vanished volcanic island. The word itself is derived from the Dhivehi word atholhu , the local language of the Maldives, making this archipelago the true home of the atoll. For centuries, these intricate underwater structures were treacherous hazards for sailors until British Captain Robert Moresby charted the first accurate maps in the 1830s. Today, the 20-odd natural atolls are the lifeblood of the nation, each offering a distinct character.
