Long before he was known to millions as Kumar Sanu, he was born on September 22, 1957, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. Growing up in the Sinthee area of North Kolkata, music was woven into his daily life. His father, Pashupati Bhattacharya, was an accomplished vocalist and composer who recognized his son's innate talent early on. Under his father's strict guidance, a young Kedarnath trained thoroughly in classical singing and mastery of the tabla.

His big break came in 1987 when the legendary composer Jagjit Singh gave him an opportunity to sing for the Hindi film Aandhiyan . After relocating to Mumbai, he received further support from the composer duo Kalyanji-Anandji, leading to his work in the 1989 film Jaadugar .
