Living in exile in Florence, Italy, the fugitive Dr. Hannibal Lecter has assumed a new identity as an art scholar, enjoying a life of culture and sophistication. However, his peaceful existence is shattered when a persistent Italian policeman uncovers his secret. Simultaneously, across the Atlantic, his only surviving victim, the grotesquely disfigured millionaire Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), is consumed by a burning desire for revenge. Verger, who was mutilated on Lecter's orders years earlier, devises a plan to use a disgraced FBI agent as bait to draw the cannibalistic doctor out of hiding.
